Different type of watch straps
There's a lot to be said about the sort of watch a man wears. Is he laid back, or is he serious? Does he value practicality, or does he value style?
There are many different facets to be considered when choosing a watch, and it's important to know how all of these parts contribute to the overall image of your person. In particular, the strap of your watch is important.
Whether you choose to wear a leather strap or metal strap, understanding the benefits and takebacks of both will help you in the long run so that you can more easily make decisions in the future. Let's start by examining the pros and cons of a watch with a leather strap.
Leather watch straps
Leather straps are most frequently considered to be the most formal of the options. Its appearance is timeless. Leather straps are always in style, and are a good choice for any man who is trying to emit an aura of professionalism. A man wearing a watch with a leather strap is a man who knows what he wants, and is not afraid to work for it.
That being said, maintaining a leather strap does happen to require a good amount of extra work on the part of its owner. Like any piece of formalwear, a leather strap watch should not be worn multiple days at a time. Leather is prone to ripping and tearing with age, and needs to be oiled every so often to keep its appearance polished. And woe to the man who gets his leather wet- it will ruin, no doubt. Not only will submerging your watch in water ruin it, simply sweating too much will also cause damage. In short, while leather watches are incredibly stylish, that style comes with a workload.
It is up to you to decide if the workload is worth the trouble.
Metal watch bands
Next up for consideration is the metal strap.
Metal straps are impressive where leather straps fall flat. That is to say, that while not as classy in appearance as leather, metal straps require much less upkeep. It does not age quickly, and what aging does appear can be polished away in no time flat. Metal will not tear, and will not soak up the natural greases from your skin, unlike a leather strap. But, as we mentioned above, a metal strap does not emit the same level of style or casual authority that a leather strap does.
Not only that, but wearing a watch with a metal strap to formal events is considered tacky. When deciding on whether to wear a leather strap or metal strap, it comes down to your own personal values. Are you the sort of man who is always at the forefront of style? If that's the case, then a leather strap would be the most suitable for you. Or, do you prefer a watch that is practical, and will not need to be replaced? If so, a metal strap will suit you just fine.
Of course, it is probably wise to invest in both styles of strap, so that your wardrobe maintains its versatility.
